Objective and Background

To promote cooperation between Dongjaing Headstream and downstream is a difficult and time-consuming task. We believe that mobilization and recruitment of volunteers for river cleaning and education lays at the foundation for cooperation of the people living upstream and downstream. To enable this to happen the Sons of Dongjiang volunteer programme was started in 2009. The programme includes the “I Green” grants to provide up to HK$5000 for volunteer proposals to encourage youth to realize and practice their green dreams.

[COOLiving Story]  The Son of Dongjiang

I joined the Sons for Dongjiang Volunteering Programme in March 2009. During the trip, I visited some low-income families in Dongjiang Source Village, and was arranged to teach environmental knowledge at primary schools and help villagers install bio-gas stoves.  I also had an opportunity to meet with local government officers. They briefed us on their regulations on construction and mining of valuable metals in woodland. The trip is a systematic study programme for me.

I realised that the water is something rare to come by, but we are generally in a lack of the consciousness on source, and the ecological compensation mechanism has not yet been established. This trip inspired me to join a delegation to the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen on behalf of the University of Hong Kong, and found Cross Border Environmental Concerns Association, which is concerned with the wetlands and marine conservation issues of Zhuhai-Macao cross-border belt. We also promote the public participation in environment protection in China.

  • Students join Sons of Dongjiang and do small environmental projects and report their achievements, investigations and results to the public;

  • All participants of Sons of Dongjiang are expected to disseminate the key messages of Dongjiang source conservation in downstream cities.

  • The programme has run 13 times in the past five years and had more than 230 volunteers participate;

  • The programme has inspired volunteers to initiate their own green work. One of the volunteers founded Xunwu Sky Association, a high school green society that organizes green work in Xunwu.
