No Car Day 2017

No Car Day 2017

Less PollutionLess Congestion

Hong Kong’s road is one of the most heavily used in the world, with over 757,000 vehicles on 2,100 km of roads. According to Transport Department, there were 546,000 licensed private cars in Hong Kong, accounting for 72% of all vehicles as at June 2017. Transportation is the second largest source, representing about 17% of our total Green House Gas (GHG) emissions. Therefore, private car is one of the important sources of Green House Gas emissions and road traffic congestion.

In order to reduce roadside air pollution, total carbon emission and alleviate road traffic congestion, Friends of the Earth (HK) would like to invite you to join “No Car Day 2017” on 22nd September 2017, World Car Free Day. Don’t drive to office on this special day, but ride on the public transportation, cycling or walking to get to work. Get into the habit of “No Car”! Your contribution on less carbon emission, cleaner air and less traffic congestion are greatly appreciated.

Let's pledge to drive less and move for low-carbon Hong Kong! 【Click here to pledge

About World Car Free Day

Europeans asked for “No Car” to tackle the problem of air pollution and excessive resource consumption caused by increasing number of vehicles. In 22nd September 1995, a number of cities in Iceland, UK and France launched “World Car Free Day”. On 22nd September 1998, “In town, without my car!” campaign was launched in France and 35 cities participated. In 2000, World Car Free Day was established to coincide with the “Mobility Week” campaign of European Union. It has grown to involve participants in over 1,000 cities in 40 countries.
