In
Hong Kong, air pollution and the ever-increasing solid waste
problem continue to be the major environmental challenges
that we face as a community. Poor air quality affects every
one of us. It is not only damaging to our health, but it is
also affecting our reputation worldwide amongst potential
overseas investors and visitors. As the process of burning
fossil fuels for electricity generation releases different
air pollutants, therefore, saving energy is one of the best
ways to improve air quality and to reduce global warming.
Some people aware of the fact that if we continue to pillage
the resources of the planet, the ecological foundations that
support our life will eventually collapse. The economic growth
and development over the past decades have been drawing upon
various kinds of resources and energy. The global economy
is using natural resources faster than they can be renewed.
It is an irreversible process if we over exploit and consume
natural resources, it makes our overall resource stock less
diverse, it also restricts the choices of future generations.
We must develop a new vision of how to positively address
environmental concerns, and work together towards a sustainable
way of living and doing business.
It
is not good enough simply to be business-friendly. Being
environmentally-friendly is equally as important. Many people
have begun to realize that the ecosystem is being destroyed,
and they are starting to understand the importance of protecting
the environment, but they don't know what to do and where
to start. Environmentalism is a shared responsibility, and
the Earth Partner 2006-07 programme organized by FoE (HK)
establishes a platform for us to work together towards a
common goal.
