Easter with a Mission “Giving
Back to Dongjiang”
During the Easter holiday,
FoE (HK) organized a group of over 30 people, from Hong Kong, Guangdong,
Shenzhen and Jiangxi, travelled more than 500 kilometers to plant
trees at Dongjiang river source in Xunwu. Joining hands with the
Dongjiang villagers, the participants have planted 11,000 trees
on the mountain slope, which was ruined by forest fire in the past.
Dongjiang river supplies drinking
water to over 40 million people downstream. To protect the river
source, the participants made good use of their holidays and took
real action to plant trees. Not only the individuals, but also companies
performed concrete actions to fulfill Water CSR; such as Computershare
planted trees to acknowledge their customers who subscribed e-services,
and Volkswagen HK Ltd planted trees to offset carbon dioxide emissions.

Position Paper: An Overview of Building Energy Efficiency Issues
in Hong Kong
The over-consumption of electricity
is exacerbating the air pollution in Hong Kong, as well as
contributing to climate change. By means of energy conservation,
e.g. building energy efficient (EE), using EE equipment and
managing energy usage, we can lessen the prevailing trend
of energy wastage.
Various proactive policies
and aggressive initiatives are crucial to promoting green
building (GB) and EE technology, while lax measures such as
the Mandatory Building Energy Codes (MBEC) (as currently proposed
by the government) and voluntary benchmarking schemes will
have little effect. It takes only a few years to complete
a building, but its long term effect on the environment is
immense. Careful design and planning in the early stages is
vital to lower its climate impact.

Low Carbon Life
Low Carbon Travel - Accommodation
To make customers feel at home, most of the hotels
or hostels are well equipped with disposable products such as
slippers, toothbrush, comb, shower cap and etc. Many tourists
like to make full use of all room facilities and resources, which
are already included in hotel fees, to prevent from suffering
losses.
To utilize earth resources effectively, and to
reduce carbon footprint during travelling, you can start by changing
accommodation habits, such as bring your own toiletries and choose
“Green Hotel” for accommodation.
It’s a global trend that the hotel industry is
going “Green” and “Low-carbon”. Hong Kong also has green model
in the industry, such as Hotel Nikko Hong Kong of FoE (HK) Earth
Partner. They put efforts in strengthening employee awareness
on environmental protection, and received Green Globe Recognition
Award from the World Travel & Tourism Council in 1997.

Take
a Close Look at FoE (HK)’s New Office
Anti Formaldehyde Odourless Emulsion
Paint
A newly renovated place often has
a paint smell, which is not only unpleasant, but also very harmful
to people’s health.
Our new office has used an “Anti
Formaldehyde Odourless Emulsion Paint”. It contains special polymer
emulsion, which can effectively absorb and decompose formaldehyde
in the air. As to paint colour, our interior walls and ceilings
are painted in white and light colour which effectively strengthen
the reflection, so as to create a brighter interior effect and reduce
energy consumption for lighting. Thanks to Yip's Chemical for donating
the Anti Formaldehyde Odourless Emulsion Paint to FoE’s new office.
