Chen
Xiang-yuan, CCTV "Economics 30
Minutes" Executive Director
As a journalist, Chen Xiang-yuan has
been covering environmental stories
for many years, and has uncovered a
number of major pollution cases and
environmental offences.
He is the first journalist to bring
to light the shocking state of poaching
in Kekexi, Qinghai province. Kekexi
is known as the third largest uninhibited
land of the world which is home to the
magnificent Tibetan antelope (Pantholops
hodgsonii).
Covering poaching in Kekexi was like
covering a war story. The Deputy Secretary
of Chiduo county, Qinghai (also the
first defense captain against poachers)
was gunned down in 1994 by 18 poachers
who killed and stripped the Tibetan
antelope of its wool, also known as
"shahtoosh". Chen interviewed
the captain's successor in September
1998. Two months later, the second defense
captain was also shot dead by poachers.
Chen's five-year relentless reports
on poaching in Kekexi have brought public
awareness that it is their consumption
pattern which breeds this horrific crime
of poaching. Shahtoosh is no longer
a most sought-after fibre for ladies'
fashion, and Tibetan antelope has its
homeland defended.
Chen cherishes all his electronic and
film archives which serve as an endearing
reminder to him of the heroic deeds
of the defense captains, who are remembered
by the local people as the "patron
saints of wild animals of the Qinghai-Tibetan
Plateau".
