Does it ever cross their mind that ('their' - we mean 'producers' here) consumers do know what they buy? We have a case here of a discerning consumer voicing her dissatisfaction with bad faith producers who have changed their product wrapping from environmentally-friendly material to plastic wrapping without realising that consumers are well aware of what they buy, including the packaging that goes with the product.

Ann wrote to Friends of the Earth (HK) telling us that Andrex bathroom tissue of Klennex, which is produced by Kimberly-Clark Corporation (distributed by Kimberly-Clark (Hong Kong) Ltd.) in Hong Kong, has its individual wrapping changed to plastic sheets.

As Ann points out, this seems to be "a backward step to have taken".

Let's check out Kimberly-Clark's Environmental Report 2002. In the report, the company states that"wherever we generate manufacturing wastes, we are committed to recycle them for reuse in our own products and packaging..."

The more we read on, the more puzzled we got. Is it another "not-in-my-backyard" case where environmental policy does not apply whatsoever to exported goods because the waste would be dumped into YOUR landfills, not MINE.

Friends of the Earth (HK) has been calling upon the HKSAR Government to put producer's responsibility and the polluter-pays principles into a regulatory framework. We also uphold consumer environmentalism by bringing environmentalism to the personal level and believe that consumers have the right to engineer their own values, and to make their consumption decision based on corporate integrity.

(Wherever we generate manufacturing wastes, we are committed to recycle them for reuse in our own products and packaging?)

Be a Green Private Eye
We welcome information and letters from readers to share with us your ideas on green consumption and waste reduction. Please do join us as a green private eye and report to us:

* Over-packaged consumer products.
Get us the name of the product and the manufacturer name, short description of the packaging (e.g. number of layers; photos will be helpful), and where you get the 'overly-done' product;

* Price differences.
Let us know the difference between how much it costs for a product sold in a refillable pack (or in bulk container), and the same product with single-use/immediately disposable packaging.

We'll trace all the sources you provide, get the manufacturers responsible for the over-packaging, and reflect to them that you want only the product, not their packaging waste. And finally we see to their reducing all that superfluous packaging when next time they deliver the products to the consumers.
