Green Christmas

Atorn
shuttlecock was mended and painted as
a white, sweet-smiling angel; rings of
hula hoops were made into the tree trunk;
and used CD-ROMs and discarded aluminum
cans were cut into different sizes and
shapes and were turned into lovely Christmas
decorations.
These were just some of the spectacular
and fun ideas of turning wastes into useful,
beautiful material at the Eco-friendly
Christmas Tree Design Competition organised
jointly by Friends of the Earth (HK) and
Towngas.
Our judges and visitors to East Point
City shopping mall in Tseung Kwan O were
all dazzled by such a wondrous display
of waste-turned eco-friendly Christmas
trees.
The winning tree from the primary-school
section of the competition was created
by S.K.H. Ching Shan Primary School, which
gathered all possible waste material from
the school and turned it into cute-looking
decorations, and strong tree trunk.
Secondary school students drew more on
their science knowledge and made good
use of daily, but 'tough' waste material
like green soft drink bottles. These bottles,
when cut into little pieces, can be made
into snow-flakes and fig tree look-a-like.
With such an innovative idea, HK Teachers’ Association
Lee Heng Kwei Secondary School won the
favour of our judges and was awarded the
secondary-school section championship.
Since 1995, Friends of the Earth (HK)
have been helping to send green Christmas
greetings by mobilising our community
members to reduce sending paper cards
and to recycle old cards.
By doing this, we have helped reduce 4
million paper cards, and save more than
a thousand trees from the axe.
This Christmas, Friends of the Earth (HK)
invited members of the public to not only
save on paper cards, but also to reduce
the packaging waste that goes with Christmas
presents and decorations.

Campaign and this year's Green Christmas
Campaign, please visit FoE (HK)'s website
