Hong Kong is a muti-cultural city with numerous restaurants. However, the public lacks the concept of saving food. In neighbouring countries like Korea and Taiwan, the average food waste amount per person is 20-30% less. [Further reading]

The food waste issue is not just a matter of volume though also the difficulties in the treatment process. Both landfill and incineration are not feasible for treating food waste due to the odour produced and its high salt and water content. Therefore, we need to make use of food waste collection, food waste de-composting and micro-organism powder to decompose the food waste into fertilizer. However the long-term solution is that we have to reduce the volume of waste by changing our habits.

Ways of recycling:

  • Food waste recycling factory
To centralize our resource on food waste recycling, off-site collection would be a more sustainable way than usual food waste decomposer. Click here for central food waste factory locations.
  • Food waste decomposer
There are many food waste decomposers available in the market that range from 5 to 500kg in their daily capacity. These kind of machines help decompose food waste effectively and keep the place clean. However, the prices vary so much so the public should check with different providers. In general, food waste would be turned into soil or water which would be used for planting and discharged upon the decomposition.
  • Homemade food waste decompose bucket
If you do not want to purchase any food waste decomposer, you may consider making a decomposing bucket. [Referring website]
