Ecological Footprint

The Ecological Footprint is a simple environmental accounting method that can provide a measure of the material intensity of our economy. The Fair Share is the target size for the Footprint, i.e, the productive areas divided by the world population.

In the study done by Friends of the Earth (Hong Kong), the Ecological Footprint is divided into 5 impact sectors, namely Energy , Water , Food , Material and Urban . Then, the 5 sectors of the Ecological Footprint can each be divided into their own mini-footprint, giving us a clearer picture of where resource impacts are coming from.

Reading the above chart from left to right, we can see the individual Ecological Footprint of a sector, such as how much energy, water, and materials are involved in our food consumption. Reading from top to bottom shows how the total Ecological Footprint is divided between sectors.

So, what is Hong Kong's Ecological Footprint? Friends of the Earth has calculated it for the year 1997. Have a look !

When you order a take away,
bring your carrier or reusable container. This helps to reduce non-biodegradable styrofoam packaging.

Promote paperless office
Promote a paperless office by sending send emails instead of mail and link up your computer network, as this cuts
down on the need for printing jobs which will save paper. Reuse computer print-out paper as memo pads or telephone message pads.

Reduce Water Consumption
When brushing your teeth, use water in tumbler instead of from a running
tap. Take a shower instead of bathing
in a bathtub. Install a dual-action flush in your toilet to reduce
water consumption.

Say Yes to Public Transportation
Public transport can usually take more people at a time to their destinations,
which reduces your energy consumption. You can also consider
other means of transportation, such as a bicycle or simply go on foot if
possible.
