June 21
Let's strip the bright coat off
the Pearl of the Orient(2008/6/15)Friends of the Earth (HK) calls on the public to switch off lights for an hour from 8:30pm on the summer solstice night on June 21, joining force with organizational participants who will turn their signboards and the buildings' exterior lights off. FoE (HK) spokesperson said, "Lights out is a token to show our concern about the environment. The Pearl of the Orient will only become greener and more beautiful, not any gloomier."
About 30 cities including the ones on the mainland, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea will echo the event on June 21. Beijing will dedicate the lights out to the deaths in Sichuan earthquake. Tokyo Tower and NSeoul Tower will experience their respective one-hour darkness on the same day. (Table 1)

A pair of bride and groom will have a half an hour long darkness on their wedding night on June 21 to show their support of the campaign. The groom Wim Chang records his daily carbon emission since July last year and realizes the importance of living a green life. He plans to tell the guests on the night about the meaning of the half an hour darkness and will ask friends to entertain the guests by singing in the dark. No soups will be served in the dark to avoid inadvertent burns.
A number of restaurants like the Peak Zen, Peak L16, and Hong Kong Park L16 at the peak have pledged their support and will place leaflets promoting the campaign and green messages on the table.
FoE (HK) spokesperson said one did not need to spend much on the lights-out night. Those who stay at home can have a candle light dinner, have a nice chat with your family, change the light bulbs to energy saving ones or simply just relax. (Table 4)
