Dim it: Lights Out on Summer Solstice
June 21
Let's strip the bright coat off
the Pearl of the Orient

(2008/6/15)Friends of the Earth (HK) calls on the public to switch off lights for an hour from 8:30pm on the summer solstice night on June 21, joining force with organizational participants who will turn their signboards and the buildings' exterior lights off. The action is to combat climate change and lighting pollution. A couple whose wedding night falls on the same day will also take part in this.

FoE (HK) spokesperson said, "Lights out is a token to show our concern about the environment. The Pearl of the Orient will only become greener and more beautiful, not any gloomier."

About 30 cities including the ones on the mainland, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea will echo the event on June 21. Beijing will dedicate the lights out to the deaths in Sichuan earthquake. Tokyo Tower and NSeoul Tower will experience their respective one-hour darkness on the same day. (Table 1)

FoE (HK) will hold a Lights Out evening event starting 7:50pm at the Chater Garden on the day. Kid dancers from Jean Wong School of Ballet will open the night with a performance of Symphony of Lights, story about the lights in Hong Kong. The Quinete will reinterpret Fishing Junks at Sunset, an old song. Tuen Mun Children Choir will sing a song about Power Smart. The DG House will showcase a Dancer in the Dark. Beats of reverberation will be delivered by Made in HK@Four Heads Percussion Group. A visionary story of A Clown in 2050 will be performed by Skyhigh Creative Partners. Theatre Horizon will tell a sarcastic story of Hong Kong people's chase for light. The special guest, Michael Hui, the renown comedian, will give a stand-up comedy in the dark. (Table 2)

There will be a count down as the night approaches 8:30pm. The host of the show, Mr. Lawrence Cheng, will count down with the audience waving the little hand torch and see the surrounding buildings, Legislative Council, HSBC, Cheung Kong Centre, Standard Chartered Bank Building, Bank of China Tower cloak in darkness.

A Dim It photo competition is being organized by the group. Digital cameras, photo printers and book coupons will be awarded to winners for prizes like The Darkest Beauty and the Most Creative Saver. Yahoo Hong Kong will promote the message of lights-out and announce the details of the competition on its web. (http://hk.promo.yahoo.com:80/livegreen/ ) (Table 3)

A pair of bride and groom will have a half an hour long darkness on their wedding night on June 21 to show their support of the campaign. The groom Wim Chang records his daily carbon emission since July last year and realizes the importance of living a green life. He plans to tell the guests on the night about the meaning of the half an hour darkness and will ask friends to entertain the guests by singing in the dark. No soups will be served in the dark to avoid inadvertent burns.

A number of restaurants like the Peak Zen, Peak L16, and Hong Kong Park L16 at the peak have pledged their support and will place leaflets promoting the campaign and green messages on the table.

FoE (HK) spokesperson said one did not need to spend much on the lights-out night. Those who stay at home can have a candle light dinner, have a nice chat with your family, change the light bulbs to energy saving ones or simply just relax. (Table 4)

Reduce paper use and promote paper recycling
If fewer trees are cut down to produce paper, we will have more trees to absorb CO2 which is the gas implicated in global warming.
少砍伐樹木, 幫助減低溫室效應. 據資料顯示, 每公頃森林每日能吸收一公噸的二氧化碳, 放出0.73公噸的氧氣.

Choose electrical appliances with an Energy Efficiency Label
改用能源效益標籤屬於第一級別的電器, 可大大減少電力消耗. 第一級別的雪櫃比普通雪櫃省電35%, 儲水式熱水爐可減少25%耗電量, 第一級別的洗衣機則可以減少用電20%等.

Energy saving
Make sure all your electrical appliances are switched off, instead of just being in standby mode, when you leave the room
睡覺前把不用的電視, 電腦, 微波爐等電器的電源關上, 比起設於備用狀態更加省電.

Keep the room temperature at 25.5 C
Electricity consumption is lowed by 1.5% for every degree Celsius increase in the thermostat
原來每調高1度空調, 一年可以節省1.5%耗電量

When you order a take away,
bring your carrier or reusable container. This helps to reduce non-biodegradable Styrofoam packaging.

Promote paperless office
Promote a paperless office by sending send emails instead of mail and link up your computer network, as this cuts
down on the need for printing jobs which will save paper. Reuse computer print-out paper as memo pads or telephone message pads.

Reduce Water Consumption
When brushing your teeth, use water in tumbler instead of from a running
tap. Take a shower instead of bathing
in a bathtub. Install a dual-action flush in your toilet to reduce
water consumption.

Enjoy natural resource
It's better to rely on natural and ventilation. Leave windows open and switch off the lights and fans which are not in use to reduce energy consumption.

Green consumption
Plan your shopping list to avoid over-consumption, which normally contributes
to household waste. Instead of ending up with many plastic bags, bring your
own shopping bag to hold smaller items. This eliminates unnecessary
consumption of plastic bags and reduces waste.

Say Yes to Public Transportation
Public transport can usually take more people at a time to their destinations,
which reduces your energy consumption. You can also consider
other means of transportation, such as a bicycle or simply go on foot if
possible.

Plants are great!
Growing plants can creat a pleasant working and living space. In additional, they can
also serve as an air purifier and give us all healthier surroundings.
