FoE (HK)’s Response to 2018 Policy Address
FoE (HK)’s Response to 2018 Policy Address

The Chief Executive delivered the 2018 Policy Address, outlining the Government’s preparations for combating climate change and for long-term carbon emissions reduction. However, the report proposes going ahead with the "Lantau Tomorrow” reclamation plan, which will inflict irreversible damage on the marine ecology. FoE (HK) is bitterly disappointed with this decision. We urge the government to balance development and environmental conservation, to withdraw this decision, and to re-consider the land supply options carefully, in order to make Hong Kong a truly "liveable city”.

“Power Smart Energy Saving Contest 2017/18 – Awards Presentation Ceremony”

"Power Smart Energy Saving Contest 2017/18” has been completed successfully. The Awards Presentation Ceremony was held in D-Park at Tsuen Wan on 1 November to recognise the outstanding performance of the participating organisations. Mr Raymond Poon - Assistant Director of EMSD, Mr Leung Wing Mo - the former Assistant Director of the Hong Kong Observatory and Mrs Mei Ng - the Chairperson of FoE (HK)’s Board of Governors were our officiating guests.

This year, Power Smart was supported by more than 2,000 organisations. Overall, 82 million kWh of electricity was saved, as compared to the same period with the past year, which is equivalent to around 57,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide. We are proud of our participants who made such a great effort in carbon reduction.

Joint Statement: Urging the Government to Implement Legislation to Tackle Disposable Plastic Waste at Source

This year, on both World Earth Day and World Environment Day the world was called upon to take action on plastic pollution. Recognising the urgency and severity of the plastic waste problem, FoE (HK), Plastic Free Seas and environmental activist Clayton Horton have simultaneously launched separate petitions to urge the Government to take action and:

  1. Implement legislations to curb the use of disposable plastic items at source;
  2. Enforce a ban on expanded polystyrene to protect the city’s water quality and the health of the ecosystem and the public.

The joint statement is supported by 28 organisations.

Joint Action by Environmental Groups: Forced the Government to Submit the Waste Charging Bill
FoE (HK), along with 6 environmental organisations, has co-signed a joint statement to urge the Government to submit the waste charging bill to the Legislative Council as soon as possible. On 31 October, the Environment Bureau announced that the Bill of Charging for Municipal Solid Waste will be introduced into the Legislative Council on November 14. We welcome the Government adopting our recommendations. However, we urge the Government to expand the scale of public education at district level in order to ensure smooth implementation of the scheme.
Jockey Club Smart City Tree Management Project

On a beautiful Saturday morning, the participants of the capacity building programme from tertiary institutions immersed themselves in the pretty woods and birds singing at Lung Fu Shan. With knowledge received from the lecture and the forest breathing on the hill, we hope the students would more in love with the nature.
