2025 Prospects: Accelerate Decarbonisation, Lead Hong Kong Towards a Net-Zero Future

2024 is set to end as the first year to breach the 1.5°C warming limit
set in the Paris Agreement, and stealing the hottest year record from 2023.
The urgency for climate action has never been greater. Hong Kong experienced
abnormal warmth throughout this year, seeing the hottest October since records
began. Researchers at the University of Hong Kong found that heatwaves may have
contributed to over 1,600 deaths in the past decade.
Without proactive measures to curb greenhouse gas emissions, Hong
Kong will continue to face rising temperatures and more extreme weather. The
city has to demonstrate the leadership and commitment, reflecting its status on
the global stage, in combating climate change and building a green and
resilient future.
A Review of Earth Chat – 2024

Looking ahead, Hong Kong still has much to do to tackle climate
change. Friends of the Earth (HK) has prepared a green wishlist for 2025.

Hong Kong's climate ambitions fall short of its status as a global
city. To lead the way toward a zero-carbon, climate-resilient future, the
government must accelerate decarbonisation and ensure the achievement of carbon
neutrality before 2050. Friends of the Earth (HK) will continue advocating for
more effective governance and a proactive response to climate change.
