Introduction

Friends of the Earth (HK) has always been concerned about waste issues and is committed to promote waste reduction. Given the excessive distribution and abuse of calendars, we worry that this will bring a heavy burden on the earth. We hope people will pay attention to this issue and start a new year with a green environment.

Many people have received a large number of calendars at the end of the year and it is not surprising that families have received more than ten. However, as the use of electronic diaries has increased, the demand for printed calendars has been reduced. Moreover, there are too many calendars due to the limited space available for hanging or placing calendars at home and offices. The excess of the calendar, which has been idle for a period of time, would be considered as useless and sent to landfills for a large amount of waste. In addition, due to the need to use paper and plastic (rubber rings and plastic bags) for producing the calendars, a large amount of carbon emissions are generated during the printing and shipping process. The earth's resource is wasted by discarding the unused calendar.

We have the following suggestions.

1. Oh Calendar! It’s Free!

If you have received more calendars than you need, you may put the excess in our collection box. You are welcome to take the calendar home as well to share resources and reduce waste. Please browse our website for more collection points.

2. No Abuse from Business and Political Organisations

Business and political organisations often print calendars for different needs and distribute them to customers or the public. Please estimate the quantity carefully and print it on recycled paper.

3. No Abuse from Public

The public should count the number and consider the style of calendars they need for their home and office, and receive or purchase the calendars according to their actual needs. If you have got more than you need, please give to your relatives and friends as soon as possible to reduce waste.

4. Tear Off Before Recycling

For easier recycling of your 2017 calendar, separate the plastic parts from the papers and bring the recyclables to the right recycle bins.
